BMW confirms inspection by EU antitrust officials

MUNICH — BMW Group confirmed that EU antitrust staff were in Munich this week to search its offices.
The EU separately said Friday in a statement that an unannounced inspection at a German carmaker was related to a possible violation of antitrust rules that “prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices” by German car manufacturers.
EU and German antitrust regulators are investigating whether German automakers held meetings to discuss suppliers, prices and standards to the disadvantage of foreign rivals. BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen Group’s VW, Porsche and Audi brands could face “very high” fines if suspicions of collusion prove true in court, European Union Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in August.
